Description:
Bizarrely, the usual stretch at FD was dry. However, there was a shortish but too-deep to-cycle pool just before the Oakington crossroads and another longer one soon after. Then, after FD, two close-together stretches where we walked, though the first may only have been about 5 inches deep – the second one definitely not rideable.
We didn’t didn’t go on to Houghton. The St Ives meadow was a lake, as were many fields near Fenstanton (we came back via Fen Drayton and Swavesey to Longstanton. A bit of road near Fenstanton was flooded but we got by on the shared-use pavement. So we went all around the busway puddles by going on the airport road from Longstanton which was fine until the very end near the Oakington junction, where we actually walked / paddled to the crossroads. On to the busway at the Histon junction. Home and dry.
I’d like to pay tribute to Bill. We were all in St Ives having arrived 4 + 3. He selflessly realised that we other six stood a better chance of making it home safely as a single group. “I’m just going on to Houghton: I may be some time”, he said. That was the last we saw of him. I’m just grateful he went off with one of my mince pies.
